The 22-year old is covering Teen Vogue’s latest issue, and while the cover looks pretty and all, the interview wasn’t. At least not for people who are obsessed with Twilight.
So what did she have to say that made people so angry?
Well, the mag released some of the excerpts from the interview where one sees the actress slam the movie franchise for promoting a “unhealthy, toxic relationship” between a girl and a vampire who finds the need to kill herself if she can’t be with the love of her life.
She says: “Twilight, I’m sorry, is about a very unhealthy, toxic relationship. She falls in love with this guy and the second he leaves her, her life is over and she’s going to kill herself! What message are we sending to young people? That is not going to help this world evolve.”
True — but Shailene seems to be missing the point that the film is very much fiction and not reality, though these cases do happen in real life.
The strangest thing about this excerpt is that though she tends to bash the Twilight franchise and how much she’s against the whole storyline, she has praised Jennifer Lawrence and The Hunger Games in the past.
If you’ve seen THG, you’d know that the movie is filled with teens killing each other in what is considered a “game,” but Shailene didn’t seem to find that as a negative thing. A girl finding it hard to be away from her loved one is worse than teens killing themselves.
Nevertheless, Shailene Woodley is gearing up to follow in Kristen Stewart’s footsteps by playing a lead role in the forthcoming Divergent franchise. Yup, another book-turned-movie flick is hitting screens later this year.
Let’s see if we can be as picky about that movie like Shailene was about Twilight.
