The 21-year old who is covering the summer’s issue of Cosmopolitan for Latinas, revealed the hard time she had during her teenage years because of the pressure of trying to live up to an image that you’re not — especially in Hollywood.
She recalls “that loneliness you get when you’re sad and it’s the middle of the night, and even though you have family and friends to call, it’s hard to pick up the phone.”
“I was used to drinking and doing drugs on my birthday. I always imagined my 21st being a huge party where I’d get sh*t-faced and go crazy.”
That 21st birthday party with drugs and alcohol never ended up happening.
Instead, Demi spent an entire week in Kenya instead for a heartwarming charity trip where she “realized that there’s so much more to life than that. Imagine walking 10 miles a day just to get water for your family? We have so much to be grateful for.”
Demi also made it clear that though she remains cleans of drugs, her bipolar is still an endless struggle which doesn’t just disappear when you want it to. However, she did say that she’s been able to control her emotions thanks to the medications she’s currently prescribed to.
“It’s a daily thing. I treat it with medication. Not everybody does that, but for me it works. That’s what works for me — medicating, checking in with people, being honest, and being grateful for things.”
