When Nicki Minaj said “No, no, no shade, no, no, no shade” during her acceptance speech for Best Female Hip Hop Artist on Sunday’s BET Awards, she reportedly meant it.
On June 29, Fifth time consecutive award winner Nicki Minaj took the stage to address some particular thoughts on her mind. After giving thanks for the opportunity to perform and represent women in a “male-driven” society, Minaj found the time to throw in a little fact about herself.
“”What I want the world to know about Nicki Minaj is when you hear Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it.”
While many reports claimed that Minaj’s acceptance speech was a hit to Iggy Azalea’s BET performance and her rumored usage of ghostwriters, Minaj instead took to Twitter to denounce the reports, claiming that the purpose of her speech was to celebrate women.
Minaj stated, “The media puts words in my mouth all the time and this is no different. I will always take a stance on women writing b/c I believe in us!”
She continued to refute the accusations, stating, “I’ve congratulated Iggy on the success of Fancy, publicly. She should be very proud of that. All the women nominated should b proud. That will never change my desire to motivate women to write. Our voices have to be heard. I hope I inspire up & coming females to do that.”
Though Minaj claims there’s no strife between the two female rappers, especially in regards to her speech scandal, previous rivalry has occurred before.
After Minaj’s performance at the 2010 BET awards, “Fancy” rapper, Iggy Azalea, spoke out on Twitter about Minaj’s lip-syncing skills.
“LMAO at Nikki saying she did the BET Awards live. Errrr. If you say so girl”
Minaj backfired stating, “Laughing at sh*t u can’t even do…study dat formula…cornball….LMFAO”
While the two seemed to settle disputes after Azalea claimed that she is in fact a fan of Minaj, a little friction between both artists still seems prevalent, at least on Minaj’s side.
Iggy Azalea has recently commented about the so called “shade” on her Instagram account.
“The general explosion of pettiness online in the last few days is hard to ignore & honestly…lame. If I had won the BET award that would’ve been great but it wasn’t my year & I don’t mind – so you shouldn’t either.”
“Generally speaking I’m unbothered by anything that ‘happened’ at the BET awards and just feel worn out by everyone trying to make me have wars with people all the time.”
She added: “Anyone who wishes me well is welcome in my life & those who don’t cant get any more of my time. I hate to see everyone exhausting themselves on my behalf over things that I’m still not 100% sure even exist & don’t matter. Just let it go.”
Hopefully whatever “beef” that is occurring between these two can pass over.
