Former Australian Olympic swimmer Ian Thorpe has come out as gay. He revealed the news during an interview on Australian television. He said, “I’ve thought about this for a long time. I’m not straight.”
Thorpe has suffered from depression and went to rehab earlier this year. When questioned about his sexuality he would deny that he was gay.
He even stated he was heterosexual in his autobiography from 2012. The autobiography reads, “For the record, I am not gay and all of my sexual experiences have been straight. I’m attracted to women, I love children, and aspire to have a family one day.”
The Olympian admits that he wasn’t ready or comfortable enough to come out until very recently when he started discussing it with his close friends. “I’ve wanted to come out for some time but I couldn’t, I didn’t feel as though I could,” Thorpe said.
He didn’t want to let down his family, fans, and Australia, but at 30 years old he couldn’t stand living a lie anymore.
Thorpe is looking forward to living a secret free life and he eventually wants to find a partner and start a family. He wants everybody to know “you can grow up, you can be comfortable and you can be gay”.
