During a guest appearance on Running Wild with Bear Grylls on Monday, the 26-year-old actor opened up about his recent stint in rehab and the reasons that led him there.
According to the heartthrob, the workload of being an actor was not the reason for his fallout; rather it was the publicity and the media’s fascination of his everyday life that took a major toll on the star.
‘Pretty soon you need a social lubricant,’ Zac said.
He continued: ‘The challenging part was never the work. That was never it,’ he said of what made him spiral out of control.
‘It was the sort of in-between work. The social aspects outside of it, I mean everywhere you go there is press in some form. It can be everywhere and it can be confusing. You spend a lot of time in your house, going crazy.’
The Craziness of the paparazzi had various unsettling effects on Efron. It was then that the High School Musical star realized that he was headed down the wrong path.
‘It was getting to the point where I was caring less for the work and waiting more for the weekend, where I couldn’t wait to go out and sort of let loose and have fun,’ he admitted. ‘But when Monday and Tuesday were difficult to get through, then I was like, ”Ah, this is bad.”
Efron added, stating that he doesn’t ever want to feel that way again.
‘I just really never again want to have to take anything from the outside into me to feel good about my outside, to be comfortable in my present skin. And that takes a lot of work.
‘It’s just meditation, and stopping and slowing down your brain.’
Efron appears to be in a better place now in his life, starring in hit movies such as “That Awkward Moment” and “Neighbors”.
Currently Zac has ben spotted enjoying his life with rumored girlfriend, Michelle Rodriguez.
Wishing you all the best Zac!
