As reported by Baltimore Sun, the Olympic star was pulled over Tuesday morning for allegedly driving 84 mph in a 45 mph zone at around 1:40 a.m.
“Mr. Phelps … was unable to perform satisfactorily a series of standard field sobriety tests,” police said in a statement regarding the 29-year-old.
Officials later continued stating that Phelps was “arrested and charged with DUI [driving under the influence], excessive speed and crossing double lines”.
The gold medalist has since taken to Twitter, apologizing for his actions.
“Earlier this morning, I was arrested and charged with DUI, excessive speeding and crossing double lane lines. I understand the severity of my actions and take full responsibility. I know these words may not have much meaning right now but I am deeply sorry to everyone I have let down.”
This marks the second time the world-renowned swimmer has been arrested for drinking under the influence.
Nineteen-year-old Michael Phelps was arrested in Maryland for a DUI in 2004.
According to TMZ, “He struck a plea deal with prosecutors and pled guilty in exchange for 18 months probation.”
Lets hope Phelps refrains from drinking and driving and sticks to what he knows best, swimming.
