Zayn Malik isn’t too happy with the false promise his former One Direction pals made to him when he left the group last year, as he now claims that they haven’t spoken since his departure.
Malik infamously left One Direction in the midst of their world tour, stating that his vision in music had drifted away from the kind of songs he was producing with the rest of the boys.
There’s no doubt that Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Liam Payne would’ve been upset and furious that Zayn could just pack his things and leave the tour in the hopes to launch a solo career.
And, of course, Zayn did end up signing a record deal with RCA Records.
So when this massive change took place, the remaining One Direction boys were so puzzled as to why one of their members would abruptly leave the group and start his solo career without even completing the tour.
Malik now explains that he doesn’t stay in touch with any of his former bandmates.
“I did try to reach out to a couple of people and they didn’t get back to me, but then publicly, when they were asked questions about it, said that they’d spoken to me and that we were friends,” he tells L’Uomo Vogue.
“But that’s not the case, I tried to reach out and be their friend but they haven’t even replied to any of my calls or texts.”
The singer then goes on to stress that being part of One Direction wasn’t who he was as an artist; he felt limited to the music he could bring to the table, which evidently led to his departure.
“To be honest, I mentally and physically distanced myself from what I was doing creatively because I didn’t want any part of it really. It didn’t feel like I was really being me.”
He concludes his interview by saying that he felt it was time to quit the band and do his own thing, simply for the fact that working with four people for over four years had gotten tiring.
He wanted to “hear himself” on a song for a change, and that’s exactly what he is doing now.
His debut album is expected to see a release date in weeks to come.
